the scuffle hoe

The label on this tool at Lowe's said "Action Hoe", but I learned from Farmgirl Susan a while back about this pretty much totally awesome garden tool called a scuffle hoe.

Seriously, five minutes and all these beds (all 2.5 of them) were weeded.

Also, I originally mulched the last bed there with newspaper and grass clippings, which was alright but weeds were popping through and it just didn't have the aesthetic appeal that I needed; bark mulch makes me happy like fresh bed linens. It's clean and tidy, just how I like it.

And yes, I realize I'm getting a little overkill with the before/afters. Don't judge me.

  1. Oh I am SO like that with the bark mulch. And, yes, the scuffle hoe is bad ass. Way to go, you.

  2. It's like an evil fetish; all aesthetic loveliness at first, and then it blends in and disappears a year from now. I really need to find a free source of this evilness...

  3. May I ask why you never included a picture of the hoe???

    1. I was hoping no one would notice that, lol. The answer is: I forgot. Here's a link to the one I got from Lowe's: http://www.lowes.com/pd_94329-48340-1866300_4294857289_44?productId=3104469

  4. always wanted to try one of those type hoes. I remember on gardening naturally Elliot used one alot. Do you sharpen this type? I looked it up yesterday and in the picture it shows a black part not sure if it was painted or had a plastic cover etc. on it. Looks like it works well from your photos... I just may try one this year...

    1. I bet you could sharpen it if it seemed to decrease in efficiency. It was about $16 at Lowes, and I know there are better and more expensive brands out there, but I think this one will serve us well. I don't think it works on giant weeds, although it did seem to grab the dandelions easily enough, but it worked best on tiny weeds that are a pain to pull out by hand because there are so many of them...
